LACMA x Peggy Weil
Reviving a visionary 3D painting for a new generation of museum-goers.
In 2018, artist Peggy Weil partnered with LACMA and my team at Astek to reimagine one of her earliest works: a hand-painted 3D wallpaper originally created in 1976. First exhibited in Seeing Double: A Survey of Contemporary Stereographic Imagery (1983), the piece was a groundbreaking exploration of visual perception and dimensional pattern.
We were tasked with translating this analog artwork into a digitally printed format for the museum's 3D: Double Vision exhibition. Under my direction, our team worked closely with Peggy and the LACMA curators to produce a faithful, digital reproduction. Wearing 3D glasses throughout the process, we meticulously color-matched every detail to ensure the final installation maintained the immersive stereoscopic effect of the original.
Installed at the entrance of the exhibit, the wallpaper reintroduced Peggy’s pioneering vision to a new generation, setting the tone for a show dedicated to the boundaries of perception and the evolution of dimensional image-making.
